Bladee Red Light Album Review

Drain Gang Founder's 2018 Trap/Cloud Rap Entry

I got into Bladee and Drain Gang mainly in 2020 I think, and I discovered Bladee from one of my favorite twitter accounts @ilovesmokingmid. I listened to a few tracks, started liking it, and eventually listened to all of Bladee, ecco2k, and Yung Lean’s discographies. Red Light is not Bladee’s first album, but I’ll skip around and review all of his albums in one shape or form. This album, beat wise, has quite a bit of American rap and trap influence, with a touch of Bladee’s signature style. He raps about clothes, women, heartbreak, the cold, and life. Here we go gtbsb till I die!

The first track is called 1d, and Bladee raps that his crew, which consists of ecco2k, himself, and Thaiboy Digital, are the new one direction in popularity. I love this song. The beat is super uptempo, and it’s fun to drive around playing this. It’s a good beginning to this album.

Golden Boy is more of a love song. Bladee sings that this woman he knows makes him feel like the “golden boy” and he says he wants her to “trust me like religion”. He loves her, but she doesn't trust him because of the money and rap lifestyle he lives. It’s pretty sad, and a stark contrast from 1d.

The next song, Westfield, is a fucking banger. He raps he’s in “Westfield with the vacuum seal, smoking til I can’t feel my face” and “Ecco pull up in LA in the i8”. I love this shit man. Just cloud rap over a nice beat, and nice catchy lines. “Walk in Prada, treat that shit like its Nike” is a GOATed Bladee lyric.

The next track, Fake News, I honestly don’t listen to a lot. It’s slow, and sad, and I listen to a lot of that already. “Put me on my back, bring me down like the flu”. and “They tell me I shouldn’t worry, but it’s fake news” are the best lines, along with “Prada walking, diirty dancing”.

Steve Jobs is a great song. The beat sounds like an alien beat, and “In Orlando, top I drop it” are so hard. “Misery loves company, so you should come hang with me” is a relatable one too ouch.

Obedient with ecco2k is SOOOOOOO GOOD. “BAD DOG BUT FOR U I’M OBEDIENT” “Can’t even see clear where I’m at doe, this not a mansion, this a castle” from Bladee are so good. Ecco’s verse though man. “Every time I close my eyes I stop existing every now and then I can’t tell the difference” and “Blacklisted at all the clubs but I can fix this” are soooooo good. His voice is so good, flow so good, everything banging on this song. 10/10 track.

For You with Ecco2k is yet another banger. “Do it for you amen, never will I love again” “Ecco pull up in a coupe we swerving” “Drinking screwdrivers at the hardware store” “Riding in the range like a derby” “Dirty, when I’m in New York I go to Jersey” “ziplock full of drywall” are all so fucking good. Just banger after banger line I yell this shit alone in my car on the daily. DAILY.

Hex is pretty good, and he sings well over the weird beat. He rly put a hex on her mind, and she’s “his river, liquid and silver”. Slept on, slower song. “Louis V locks in my chain”.

Nike Just Do It is another sad song. “Heard you say you wanna die, so do I, just do it like Nike tonight” is just so sad. I cry to this still. “DG Number 9 but they blessed me twice” and “I’m not tryna be with you go play with lego” are good bars too. “Futurama bleak, i’m going on a bender” is great too. “If I go out sad that’d be the perfect ending, if I go out bad would that make you happy?”.

I Love That thing you do. “RIP my lungs I’m smoking napalm, tell me who you wait on”, “that thing you do I’m bleeding heavily, you’re my injury” are really good.

College Boy is a great way to end the album. “Gassed off of you, I feel like a college boy” and “I’m gonna take it to the face” in the beginning are great. I like this track, but not as much as the rest.

Overall, I love this album. The ecco2k features are great, the raps are catchy and hold up, and the beats are trappy but still have an alternative influence on them. Bladee’s Red Light, in my opinion, is an 8/10. Love this album. DG SB fr man.
